Planning Pitch

Hi all,

Once you have completed your initial focus group with members of your target audience you will need to start working on your planning PowerPoint pitch. This will give you an opportunity as a group to pitch your ideas back to members of the class, who will hopefully give you constructive feedback on your ideas before you go off to start filming (NOONE IS GOING TO STEAL YOUR IDEAS!)

Below is a list of information that should be included in your PowerPoint:

  1. Introduce chosen song
  2. Genre (which conventions will you use/ develop or challenge?)
  3. Star Image of artist (to include values and ideologies as well as physical appearance costume/styling)
  4. Target audience (detailed audience profile)
  5. Overall meaning/ concept of video
  6. Intertextual references
  7. Narrative synopsis of video
  8. Animatic storyboard
  9. Setting/ locations/ Props
  10. Any questions (you should end the presentation by giving the audience an opportunity to ask questions – this will form part of your audience feedback and may help you to revise some of your original ideas)

I would advise that one person in the group take responsibility for the animatic storyboard and the other two members divide the sections on the PowerPoint between them?

DEADLINE:  FRIDAY 17th OCTOBER (presentations will be given on the following Monday  20th October)

Codes and Conventions Research Task (pt2)

EXTENSION TASK:

Look at some past music videos from your chosen genre (1980’s-1990’s) - have the conventions been developed over time? Do the changes reflect a cultural shift in the ideological values of wider society? Or the development in technology?

2.  By now you should have detailed notes on a range of videos from your chosen genre. Turn the information gathered as well as clips of the videos themselves into a PowerPoint presentation, which you will present in pairs, back to the class.

Deadline:  Be ready to SUBMIT your work on Friday 12th September.

Codes and Convention Research Task

Research the codes and conventions of Three of the following music video genres:
  • Rap/Hip-Hop
  • Pop
  • Dance
  • RnB
  • Rock

Your research will have two parts:

  1. Select at least FOUR recent videos from EACH chosen genre and make detailed notes on the codes and conventions found across the video.

Who is the artist? Give the title of the song

Are the videos Narrative, performance based, concept based (or a mixture of both)?

If the video features a narrative, what is the narrative about? Is the performance on
location, in a studio setting, on a stage? Does the performance involve dance routines?

Describe the locations/settings in the video
What is the artist’s star image? (Describe how the artist has been styled e.g. hairstyle, costume, jewellery etc)

Also comment on any significant camera work/ editing/ lighting

Intro to Music Video

Music Video Codes and Conventions

Andrew Goodwin’s Conventions

  • There should be a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals (with visuals either illustrating, amplifying of contradicting the lyrics.
  • There should be a relationship between the music and the visuals (again with visuals either illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the music).
  • Particular music genres may have their own music video style and iconography (such as live stage performance in heavy rock).
  • There appear to be lots of close ups of the main artist/vocalist – this is usually demanded by the record company.
  • The artist may develop their own star iconography.
  • Music videos feature can be narrative/performance or concept basedThere is likely to be reference to voyeurism, particularly in the treatment of women, but also in terms of systems of looking e.g. screen within screen, binoculars, cameras etc
  • There are likely to be intertextual reference, either to other music videos or to films, photography and TV texts.

Welcome to A2 Media Studies

Hi Year 13,

Welcome to this years practical coursework blog. Remember to use this blog regularly to check for updates on deadlines, support and guidance for tasks you need to complete and examplar work from previous years.

The brief:
A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with:

a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package)

a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package)

There is a lot more to this years coursework than the Foundation Production so you will need to work hard from day one. Good luck!

Best wishes
